Chanting

"I guarantee you one thing tonight: No one's problems will be solved. So just forget about everything and sing. There is no reason to hold onto anything. Let go and give yourself wholeheartedly to what we're doing for this short period of time. Sing your heart out and we'll see what's left to worry about when it's over."

Krishna Das

I like to chant before I begin doing the yoga postures, the actual physical part of yoga, because chanting brings calmness and empties the mind from worldly noise. Chanting also helps the practitioner bring focus to the here and now. Physical benefits are also immediately felt. After about 20 minutes of chanting, the breathing becomes steady and deep, the pulse and heart rate slow down. There are some long-term benefits as well. Chanting stimulates the thyroid and thymus glands. It also energizes the fifth (throat) chakra. Chanting with a group is a much more powerful experience than doing it solo.

It is not necessary to be an opera singer to derive benefit from chanting. And you do not need to know Sanskrit to chant along. The chants are repetitive and in most cases, Buck will have the words written on a flip chart. I would suggest that you give chanting a try. If it's not your cup of tea, just stick with the yoga practice.
